The 5 W's of Words That Perform on the Web

Before you begin to write new content for your web site, it’s a good idea to figure out exactly how you’re going to use your words to get the most from them. Words that Perform. You want to dazzle the reader and prompt them to act…but you also need to dazzle the search engine robots so people will find you. Here are some questions to ask that will help guide you.


Who

Who do you want to attract? Customers only? Others in the industry? Will social media help?

Who do you want to share your site and information with? Have you considered feeds such as RSS?

Who is going to manage the content management of your site on a regular basis?


What

What is your motive for having a site? Selling? Informing? Entertaining? A combination? Your writing strategy and style should be representative of your goals.

What is your web personality? Is it reflected in your design and the voice of your copy? Range: all business, kind of fun, hilarious)

What messages do you want to convey? Are you aware that fresh content added on a regular basis, with linked keyword-rich-phrases, is crucial for bringing customers to your site and engaging them once they have arrived?

What More? Are you aware of all the online marketing tools that will further your viral marketing and communications efforts? (Video, blogs, forums, podcasts, etc.)

What’s New? Do you have someone analyzing new internet trends so you can stay current with what’s working best, what’s not and why?

What’s Next? Do you have someone watching for new trends so you can outmaneuver your competition? Have you budgeted web dollars to stay ahead?


Where

First and foremost, where do people find you? After all, everyone’s goal is to “get found” on the web. Analyze where your traffic is coming from and get advice on how to grow it even more.

Where would you like to share your information with others? Besides posting new content on your web site, are you pushing the news out to everyone appropriate to your goals by using RSS feeds, news wires, blogs, social networks, search engine rankings, video, online ads, and links? Did you know that’s how the “crawlers and robots” find you and link back to your site?


When

When do you update your site content for the greatest impact? Fresh news served up daily?...Weekly?...Monthly? (at a minimum, please..)

When visitors come to your site, do you know what they do and where they spend the most time? Do you conduct and study web analytics to adjust your strategy?
